Meet Our Nation...
The Kingdom of Swaziland is the smallest country in the southern hemisphere with a population of approximately 1 million. It is landlocked inside the country of South Africa and borders Mozambique to the east. The nation is very rich in traditional culture and is led by the last absolute monarch on the continent of Africa, His Majesty, King Mswati III.
Swaziland is struggling with the highest HIV rate in the world which has resulted in the largest percentage of orphans per population of any country in the world. Unemployment stands at approximately 40% while 70% live on less than $1 (USD) per day. Swaziland also has the highest Tuberculosis and Pneumonia rates in the world.
The first findings from a nationally representative HIV survey were presented March 12, 2012 at the 19th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2012) in Seattle, WA. The Swaziland HIV Incidence Measurement Survey (SHIMS) found that overall HIV prevalence, or percentage of the population living with HIV infection, is 31% among adults ages 18-49. Current prevalence peaks at 54% for women ages 30-34 and at 48% for men ages 35-39.
